A journey from passiontide to Good Friday, and from the mid-16th to early 17th century, featuring works that might have been performed in the various Papal churches of Rome. At the centre will be the original version of Allegri’s Miserere Mei, which is substantially different from that commonly heard today. The other works are by 16th and 17th century composers who worked under the jurisdiction of the Papal Curia in Rome – including Victoria, Josquin, Allegri, Palestrina, Anerio and Frescobaldi. As ever, we have taken care to present this music in an authentic way in terms of pitch, ornaments and vocal style.
Improperia – Tomás Luis de Victoria (d. 1611)
De profundis à 5 – Josquin DesPrez (d. 1521)
Recercar dopo il Credo (Messa della Madonna) – Girolamo Alessandro Frescobaldi (1583 – 1643)
Miserere Mei, Deus – Gregorio Allegri (c. 1582 – 1652)
With psalm verses to the Tonus Peregrinus falsibordoni – Giammateo Asola (d.1609)
Ave Regina Cælorum – Tomás Luis de Victoria (d. 1611)
Sicut Cervus – Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (d. 1594)
Christus Factus Est – Felice Anerio (d. 1614)
Toccata per l’Elevatione (Messa delli Apostoli) – Girolamo Alessandro Frescobaldi
Agnus Dei (17th century plainsong)
Stabat Mater – Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
